Description
The winged lion has long been a traditional symbol of Venice. It is the symbol of Mark the Evangelist (the apostle), the city’s patron saint since 828 AD when his remains were extracted from a tomb in Alexandria, Egypt, and brought to Venice. Venetian legend has it that, while visiting the region of Italy, later to become Venice, Mark was approached by an angel, greeted with those words, and told that the Venetian lagoon would be his ultimate resting place. As the courageous lion leaps from his column he looks back to Venice and the hanging lanterns that represent the three other canons of Renaissance painting. Venice for such a small region hosted a large proportion of artisans and generated a unique Italian identity. For a city so small in mass, it definitely received the ‘lion’s share’ in culture and creativity.
