The gondolier is an iconic image of the Venetian culture. Recognisable by their straw boater and the stripy shirts. Every gondolier must belong to the thousand-year-old Gondolier’s Guild which is strictly controlled. He must find an experienced gondola driver to act as mentor, attend four hundred hours of instruction, and later pass a rigorous examination which tests navigational skills including their knowledge of other languages and, most importantly, knowledge of Venice’s culture and sights. The action of the gondolier is almost like a dance, the back step, as they glide their gondola through the many canals takes precision and practice and is a partnership of gestures between the boat and the driver.
